A hilarious end to the 'Husky' STORY....

The Tale of What Happened to my Elderly Husky, the much loved older sewing machine in my textile life....

Sigh, it is my sadness to have to report that I DID indeed receive that dreaded service call.  Barry was very kind as he imparted the news that there was absolutely no hope for the dear old Husky... that he had spent hours trying to revive her, but to no avail.  He did offer to drop off the "carcass" by which I am sure he meant the final remains of the recently deceased... really, I am sure he did!  But I WAS BRAVE, took a deep breath, and said no, that was very kind but really she should just go directly to the great sewing machine heaven in the sky (or words to that effect!) Barry then, again so kindly told me he would plunder the remains before he threw it (her) in the dumpster, which I am sure he meant that he would harvest the parts to help give new life to other old Huskys who could be revived with a much needed transplant.... really, I am sure he did!

So I thanked him very much for trying so hard with dear sweet Husky and hung up the phone... sigh.

After supper I am just getting ready to do some more printing when my intercom rings... hmm who could that be? It's Barry... and he tells me he has something for me.  So thinking that he has, for whatever reason, decided to return dearly departed old Husky I meet him in the lobby...

He is turned away from me when I get off the elevator and when he turns around he does NOT have a machine in his hands but a lovely bouquet of flowers!!!!  He so very formally presents them to me as my condolence bouquet of flowers!!!!! in memory of the dearly departed!  I cannot begin to tell you how hard I laughed. OMG never in a hundred years could I have seen this one coming! It really was the most perfect humourous end to our fun conversation over what could not be done for my old machine.  The man has a truly wonderful, and wicked sense of humour! !

And here they are:

As I said, absolutely gorgeous!!!!! What a Hoot!

THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!!!

This Post is a true joy to write.... Vancouver Islanders, especially you in Victoria, take notes! and for all you others, this is a story to remember both as a business owner and a consumer.

So first The Challenge:
The move to our new studio space also brought up the need for some faster and more modern machinery, especially in the Serger department.  But living in a smallish city on Vancouver Island, there are no stores here that sell sergers... hmmm so being an ex-Victorian I call the place most Victorians call first for sewing machines.

The Challenge for the first store contacted:
First, I need to purchase 3 new machines and I need to have them shipped to me... so can you do this?  No, we are "not allowed" to take orders over the phone or to ship.  Really???  Furthermore she explains that the store took a hit on someone ordering machines with a credit card.... hmmm isn't that why the credit card companies have authorization numbers???  So, I am not pleased as taking the time to drive down to Victoria just consumes time, that quite frankly I don't have right now.  But, while I have her on the phone, I ask her to quote me some recommended models and the prices for same.  She did listen to what I wanted... but I don't think she heard me at all... bottom line was I needed faster machines that were "heavy duty" but not industrial... and what I got back from her was an immediate quote on 2 very high end machines that use air to thread... no doubt lovely machines but not anything to do with what I needed and the coverstitch would have to be specially ordered. And she tried to talk me out of the coverstitch machine!!!  Good grief. Odd she didn't realize that in running a design studio, that specializes in sewn products that I probably had a pretty good idea of what was out there, just not the specifics on what they carried.  Hmmm, no shipping, no phone order and the highest quote on inappropriate machines.... time to move on.

The challenge for the second store contacted:
To at least meet some of my needs.... how quickly bad customer service deflates eh? I decided that I would check out the one place here that does sell sewing machines, not sergers though and revived my "want list" when I called the Cloth Castle in Victoria:
http://www.clothcastle.com
and my first query question was.... I live in Duncan, I need two machines and I need them shipped.  Without a moment's hesitation, Barry informed me that he quite often drives up Island and could drop them off.  Problem solved!!.  Move on to the really fun stuff.... talking machines....
I need a serger and a coverstitch machine.  Both need to be fast and can handle heavy duty use.  Again without hesitation he directed me to their website, recommended 2 machines for me to look at and then gave me the prices for both... extra joy to me, and completely unlooked for, both were on Sale!  I looked at both, was very impressed.  Called him back, asked a couple of questions and the deal was sealed. Problem solved!!
All of this took hardly any of my time.... did I mention I don't have much of this right now ??  Barry was going to a family function up Island and would drop the machines off on his way up, on Friday.  Perfect. I chose exactly what he recommended the s15 and the s25....
http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/ca/en/421.htm

Friday arrives and in the pm so do my machines... Yahoo!  I immediately open the boxes and take out the instruction booklets before doing anything else.  Oh no... one of the machines is the wrong machine in the right box.... oh bummer. So on to the phone I go, knowing that Barry is up Island but wanting to leave a message at the store for when he arrives.  So, when I phone the store I get Brian.... I explain the problem and he is so nicely understanding and then asks if he can put me on hold.  Unknown to me, he has called Barry, explained the problem.  Brian has both of us on the phone, and assures me that a) Barry is not happy that this mix-up has occurred, b) the right machine is in the store, that the factory has made this boo-boo but unfortunately Barry won't be going back up Island for a couple of weeks, and c) but will come and pick-up the machine I have on his way back.  While we are having this discussion, I can hear I voice in the background to where Brian is... he then relays to me that Vandy (an obsiously lovely woman who works there :)  is going up Island on Tuesday and could drop off the new right machine then!! Problem solved!!

She did.  A delightful woman.... and her husband even offered to take the machine upstairs for me!  Both my machines are perfect and perfectly suited to what I need.

I have to tell you all that this experience and my interactions with all these wonderful Cloth Castle people made my day, my week, my month!!  Sure it is unfortunate that the one machine wasn't the one I wanted but it is always, always, always what is done with the problems (no avoiding 100% them, they do happen) that sets one company miles above any other.  As far as I am concerned, these people are quite simply THE BEST and I thank each and everyone of them for this incredible customer service.  I really, really do.

The Extras:
Barry took my most favourite old machine, that has been stuck in reverse forever and is truly optimistic on being able to breath life back into it.  I am so attached to this machine that it has come with me everywhere and when I was in Calgary I wanted to get it fixed (as it stalled while I was there) and seriously the one place just wanted me to buy a new one, a cheap new one, for about the price of the repair... and I am sorry but a cheap sewing machine wasn't going to replace the Husky that is as solid as a rock and extremely well made.  They didn't even attempt to get my machine repair business.  The second place I took it to, would look at the machine, and call me with an estimate... at least it was in the repair shop!  Alas, the repair man was nice, saying really the machine just needed a good cleaning, no new parts, but that it would take him.... 4-5 hours at   a rate that you associate with getting your car repaired.... and would I like to consider buying a new one.

Barry's response was, oh ya, I know the machine you are talking about and repairing sewing machines is what we do!.... sigh.  I definitely feel my old and dear machine is in good hands and if anyone can repair it, it will be them and that I will have a good running working machine returned to me.  Love, love it.  If for some reason, which I sincerely doubt, that it cannot be enlivened, I will know absolutely that everything that could be done, has been.  Did I say that I am really, really attached to this marvelous Husky???

I hope you enjoyed this story as much as I enjoyed telling it :)  excellent stuff, eh?

New one layer, lightweight crib blanket/sheet coming very soon....

This slight change in line-up is purely customer driven!  I have had so many requests and orders for very light blankets, for people who live in the hotter areas of North America, that I have added these to our blanket product line... to be on the websites soon.

Single layer muslin blankets and blankets from our new ultra-light sheer muslin (all organic of course) are perfect for just a little cover without adding any heat.... thank you all for your great suggestions and requests!  Anytime you want to add a suggestion, please, please let me know... I love feedback :)

An example:
The hummingbirds featured below and on a previous post are done on the ultra-light sheer muslin, 28" x 36" vs. the swaddling blanket size at 40"x40"

Hummingbirds at last...

This little swaddling blanket didn't make it onto any of the websites, as it was part of a custom order I just did and that they finally received.... the postal strike, in Canada, certainly made for some interesting order fulfillment issues... boo!  And from what Jen said, she is very happy with her order for her "coming soon" bebe :) Below the hummingbird shots are a couple of the Bluebirds in a Sweetheart tress done in greens rather than blues as originally done.  I won't be doing anymore of this particular motif, but will have a slightly different version coming soon..... the photos are very light as both were printed on the Ultra-lightweight sheer muslin and I should have used a darker background for them... but hopefully you can still make out the details... the hummingbirds turned out really well and I am so pleased with the motif... just not thrilled with my abilities as a photographer!!

Finally getting back into the swing of things again!!!

The last month has been fully of all sorts of unexpected events, but it looks like things are back on track again with all good news.... I am feeling so much better (and thank you to all of you who sent your kind thoughts for getting well) AND Botanical Bebe has a new home.... Yahoo!  My new studio is very spacious, light and airy and a real joy to work in... so stay tuned for a lot of new products hitting the webs sites very soon.

Here is a peek at our new digs (no more studio at home... an end of an era!)

A Little Re-purposing going on.....

From time to time perfectly lovely items will have an OOPS! happen... could be a smudged print or a rolling brush leaving an "interesting" trail or a tipping accident, where the dye tray inexplicably leaps out of a hand... boo on that one!! And so the lovely item is not going to make it to the saleable category... so re-purposing seems to be a very good solution.  These little face cloths are made from 2 separate receiving blanket wannabes... with all the Whoops! removed.  They will be going on sale as a set of 8... 4 from each pattern.

From this....

to this......

Paying it forward a bit: a cute but semi-long story

http://www.cowichanvalleyartscouncil.ca/mail.php

Last Wed. I was doing a library run and noticed something new in our wonderful Island Savings Cultural Center.. PORTALS.  this is a wonderful showcase space for local artists and artisans and right now they are showing work by the people who do the volunteer work at Portals.

My guide that day was just lovely and she mentioned that the showing was from very experienced artists and the just getting started ones, who all volunteer there.  And then she showed me hers- an acrylic and a watercolor.  She is one of the "just getting" started artists and her landscape was beautiful and as she mentioned, she wasn't sure of the watercolor, would like to do more with the medium, but wasn't too sure about it.

Digressing for a moment... I had taken 2 full watercolor courses a number of years ago by a wonderful artist Jim Wispinski  http://www.artstore.islandblue.com/artclasses/

and the initial reason was that dye and watercolours act and react in similar ways... well instead by the time I was finished, I was hooked on watercolours for watercolours sake (hence the 2 full courses!) and I had a great binder of examples to refer back to---- that I have indeed carted and stored for many years.  Finally deciding that the binder needed to go, it was sitting on the re-cycle waiting it's turn to be taken downstairs... I went to the Library and forgot the binder on the way out.

So flash back up to my Portals discovery- and I thought to myself, maybe those examples would be helpful to this lately blooming artist... I offered, she accepted and today I delivered!  And from the look on her face that I remembered and her practically devouring the binder pages and not looking up as she said "oh thank you!"  I walked away a VERY happy camper.... it felt so good to see that same look on someone else's face over the JOY OF WATERCOLOURS and feel that intense desire to LEARN through someone else intensity.  It was a VERY good moment and I just wanted to share it with you all.

NEW FABRIC ARRIVED!!

One of my most favorite fabrics to work with has been unavailable for quite some time... but Finally! I found a source for a different organic sheer fabric that I think is going to be lovely for the Ultra Lightweight Swaddling Blankets... it has been whitened, at the mill with hydrogen peroxide and NOT Bleach, and has this wonderful soft but distinctive texture to it....

I will be starting to print this new fabric on the weekend and will keep you posted on the progress!

Botanical Bebe is supporting this cause....

In Chemainus (where my folks were from) they are having a Silent Auction in support of purchasing a NEW x-ray machine for the Urgent Care Facility there.  This was a cause Mom was particularly interested in and we, the family, had asked that donations be made to them in lieu of flowers.... and I am so pleased to say that many, many people did just that!  I am very pleased to be able to donate a gift certificate to their Silent Auction and it was a lot of fun putting the package together.  I went with a gift certificate rather than product, as it gives the successful bidder the option of choosing what kind of items they would like to have... for a little girl, boy or "we don't know yet!" and to use it themselves or to give it to someone special to use.  I will have product there so people can see and touch!  And this is what is going on display:

Kimono Sleepsac and Infant Hat

Lightweight (doublesided) Baby Blanket

Flannelette Receiving Blanket

I really wish them all the best and that the Auction is a very successful one!

Serious Re-organizing of the Studio!

For most of the weekend I cleared away the piles of "I will get to this later", by finally getting to them!! and in the process I have completely re-organized the studio so much more efficiently.... I can't believe I didn't think to make these changes sooner.  Everything I need has a place and when really working here today, I couldn't believe how wonderful it was to want something and it was THERE! Right where I wanted it to be..

Today I posted 2 new Flannelette Receiving Blankets, with a third all ready to go but just waiting for the Kimono Style Sleepsac!  and here they are.....

and.....

and this one is just waiting in the wings.....

this little pattern is the third one in the newest core patterns for Spring/Summer
Little Girl Babies:  Butterflies
Little Boy Babies: Snails, Dragonflies and Grasses (wait till you see the Kimono!)
"We don't know yet" Gender Neutral : Sparrows

So what is happening in the studio these days?

As you can see from my postings here and on both the Botanicalbebe site and my Etsy store, I am spending more time on my studio work this week, which has been very helpful and soothing to my soul ! Add to that an order coming in from one of my most favourite customers, Jennifer at  http://www.bellavitahome.com/ and it is starting to feel a little bit normal around here... which is just lovely.

The weather is starting to improve on the Island (that would be Vanouver Island on the westcoast of BC, Canada :) so even when I am working indoors, printing, printing, printing, it is just so energizing all this wonderful sunshine!

Another one of my customers, who was so understanding and kind, suggested that I create a design to honour my Mom, and once I quit crying... it was such a beautiful suggestion... I started to give this a lot of thought.  Where this thinking has brought me to is a combination of hummingbirds (for both my customer and Mom, as she really loved them too) and Cherry Blossom Branches... she was always amazed that I could create the branch motifs or Columbines which are so wonderfully diverse and a particular favourite of both hers and hummingbirds! This is a wonderfully calming design exercise and I will always be extremely grateful to my dear customer's kindnesses to a complete stranger and this heartfelt suggestion.

I will let you know when it is more on the drawing board than in my head, and will post the progress as the ideas unfold.

Another New Design..... Beautiful Butterflies

These little bits of fantasy in flight are way too much fun to print ! Watch for other colorways in this motif because I just can't seem to get enough of them.....

See what I mean ? !

Little Birds Ready to Go!!

This is what they look like now! Both are available on my website http://www.botanicalbebe.com/ or at my Etsy store http://www.etsy.com/shop/ecotextures

Little Birds, little birds!

These are 3 new designs I've been working on featuring little birds... and although I have printed them on specific items, these motifs can be printed on kimono nightie/sleep sacs, sleepers or rompers.

The colors are 2 shades of greens for the birds, orange beaks, black eyes and a gray brown for the branches with a bricky color for the buds. The bands for all three will be in the darker green on the little birds.

I will post photos of the finished items, so this is just a sneak preview of what is coming!!

Kimono Nightie/Sleep Sac and Hat with Little Birds in Flight and on the Branches:

Next up is a little Sleeper or Romper featuring just little birds sitting in the branches:

January / February Family Medical Difficulties

Just wanted to take this bit of space to let you know why I haven't been blogging since the beginning of the year and why Botanical Bebe is running a bit behind.

My mother has been diagnosed with a rather rare form of stomach cancer, linitis plastica, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linitis_plastica

We have been overwhelmed with Medical tests, appointments for tests results, re-testings, daily health challenges for someone who can no longer eat solids, and a mountain of details that all need sorting.....

But now that we have answers and a leveling off of finding nutrition balances and the details are managed, I will be able to blog on a more regular basis and showcase what is going on in the Studio, as I am able to give time to it.

Thank you for your patience and all the kind and heartfelt words of encouragement and support that have been shared with both me and the rest of the family

All the very, very best to you all
Leslie
